An Election Won't Be Stopped Now...

...unless the Governor General refuses to dissolve parliament - which will (almost certainly) never happen.

Dion has refused to return PM Harper's calls, apparently that means that since you don't want to talk to the Prime Minister on the phone, then don't bother planning for a new legislative session. It is increasingly evident that Harper wants an election -and he's gonna get it. At first the Liberals did not believe him, but now they know that he's serious. Unlike Dion, when Harper wants an election -he wants an election (remember the spring of 2005?).

There are two possible outcomes to all this election talk. Either Dion will meet with PM Harper - and Harper says he's unreasonable and calls an election -or- PM Stephen Harper will tell the GG that because the Leader of the Opposition doesn't want to discuss with him about how to bring the minority parliament forward, parliament has become dysfunctional and an election must be called.

So there we have it, we finally have an election that was technically supposed to happen last fall - if you play the minority government odds. Now its time to ponder what the outcome of the election will be...

A big blue Tory majority is what the outcome will be...And you can mark my words on that.

Grind a grit

I'll be watching Dion closely over the next week, and into the Lib caucus, to see where he goes, what he does. You would think he'd convene his inner circle soon, and talk campaign talk.

But I wouldn't be at all surprised if he sticks to his previous plan of campaigning in the by-election ridings. Either having his head in the clouds, or his head in the sand, seems in character for Dion.
Or as Jean Lapierre said about him: "he doesn't have a political bone in his body".

Here's a thought....let Dion huff and puff about not needing an early election and about obeying the October 09 election date. Bring back Parliament...try to get through piece of legislation that the Liberals will not pass...then Mr Harper can turn to the press and the voters and talk about the waste of time and money the by-elections cost, about avoiding his meeting with the PM in early August, about why Mr Dion refused to tell him he would not support any legislation put forward by the Cons. I know Mr Harper is supposed to be the tactics guy, but, breaking his own law probably wont cost him the government, but, I just cant see it gaining him a majority. Let Dion fall on his sword in September and then he can say to the Canadian people.."I told you so"... billg

Yesterday I'd have bet against the PM precipitating an election, but today it certainly looks like he intends to go. I'd prefer he waited until later in the winter when people were going ballstic over their electricity and heating bills which would certainly have made the Nutty Professor's green shaft much less palatable.
I don't see a majority for Mr. Harper, but he may get a stronger minority which will be almost as good since the Liberals will be so far in debt by then that they won't dare face another election for many years. This will leave the parliamentary committees as disfunctional as ever, but the Conservatives could care less about that. Their legislative agenda will pass with a lot of huffing and puffing by the opposition, but no real desire to go to the polls again.

PMSH has got the opposition in a pincer movement. All of Citoyen (yes he is a French citizen)Dion's huffing and puffing two weeks ago about Canadians being ready for an election has dissapeared. He was going around Canada saying "I will choose the time for an election",WRONG..... Le citoyen is messing with the wrong man. As for Dumb and Dumber voting to bring the GVT. down knowing full well that the Fibs would be sitting on their hands. I do not think hair net wants an election, and Taliban Jack has come out against it. PMSH has out smarted them all, hmmmm, I think it is quite easy to outsmart Larry, Curly and Moe. Good on you "don't mess with me" PMSH

Would love to see how there will be a Tory majority. When they will BARELY able to squeeze out a minority government when the Grits were at their lowest with Ad Scam.

The Tories did not win the last election - the Grits lost it. It was more a vote against the Libs than a vote for the Tories.

Mark my word ...... at best the Tories get a smaller minority.

Baby blue eyes is playing with fire here and he is going to get burned

The Liberals may hold on to most of their Ontario seats, but the Green Shift will likley shift their seats to the conservatives in Atlantic Canada. Also the Bloc will likley loose some seats to the Conservatives. Right now it looks like PM Stepehn harper will get around 145 seats, just shy of a majority!

anon

But this is not 2005.
-The Afghan mission was extended by DION. No soldiers in our streets.
-The abortion issue was rested yesterday. No scary cons will take away womens rights.
-The enviro issue, Cons supposed weak spot, Libs gifted Cons with a really really stupid Lib policy, tax Canadians when the economy is uncertain...so dumb
-18 months in , the new leader, Dion, polls behind Dipper Jack
-Bush is gone
-Canadians made fearful of the unknown hidden agenda in 2005 are now being told by Dion and Jack
'heh, Harper got his agenda thru, yah, accomplished lots, we need to keep this government alive'

So you see anon, the Liberal weapons arsonal is capoooot, their bank balance consists of 9% bank loans, and Dion needs more than 3 pillars to keep the LPC from sinking.
