Russian agression, and tensions with the West, are beginning to reach a level similar to that of the Cold War. With the invasion of South Ossetia, the Russians seemed to have thrown away Post-Cold War Diplomacy and decided to show off their military might. The United States, for obvious reasons is not too pleased with this, but there is little they can do.
It is becoming increasingly apparent that the Medvedev-Putin Administration is focused on gaining power in the former Soviet Republics. Are the Russians orchestrating a merger of the former Soviet Republics into a new union? It is still too early to tell, but with Russia's anger at Poland's missile defence deal with the USA, and Russia's new aggressive attitude towards its neighbours, we could be headed into the 'Second Cold War'!
I think its time for a new Arctic Defence strategy to protect Canada against any Russian threat. Also, the West has to do more to accommodate China, because if a new Cold War breaks out, we will have to ensure that China is the West's friend, and Russia's enemy.

More like WW3 and China is Russia's ally building the navy that will blockade the oil when the aggression hits the right point.
First a terrorist strike to spread chaos, then a global warming scam to destabalise the economies then the armed attack will come when the west is at it's weakest, which concidering the enablers in all the western countries right now won't be long coming.
This picture being painted by Russia, the U.S., Poland, etc., is changing daily. I think that your key point is the positioning of China. With all of the coverage this has been getting, China has been mentioned relatively rarely. it follows that theirs is an opinion that I want to know about, for better or worse.
If a new Cold War does erupt, China's position will be crucial. The Russians could be kept at bay if China is friendly with the West, if not...well, trouble!
Its still too early to tell, but China's economic dependence on Western trade is growing daily, however, they seldem cooperate with the West diplomatically...
The US should not add Georgia to NATO. Imagine if Georgia was in NATO today. We would be mobilizing a million soildiers to fight Russia to free Georgia. Georgia, like individuals, must be self-reliant and not expect nanny state protection from the USA.
I think the label "Cold War" that commentators are using is misinformed. Lets not forget that the original Cold War was very much an ideological battle, Soviet Communism vs Western Capitalism being fought through proxy states. What we see today is more about imperial states vying for economic influence (US, Russia, China, etc...).
A more accurate analogy would be pre-WWI imperial Germany or Tsarist Russia.
unfortunately, the reality talks about approaching the 3World War - the Cold War would look like a gift but not to us.
